About the Internship
Goal: To provide an avenue for nurturing an interest in health care in pre-college adults.
Setting: Physician offices throughout Brevard County.
Responsibilities: The student will spend his/her days making rounds with a physician mentor in the physician’s office. The student will be expected to interact with patients, families and health care providers both in person and over the phone. The student may be asked to perform internet-based medical searches.
Duration: Two weeks (10 calendar days)
Start date: Two week intervals beginning May 30, 2011
Internships available: Up to 4.
Stipend: Various awards from $500 to $25.
Internship hours: 8-4 or 9-5 M-F or Tu-Sa or W-Sun per student’s preference.
Grading: If desired, each student will be evaluated for the purpose of their own self-improvement.
Grading criteria will include: work ethic, medical acumen, and interpersonal skills. Grades will be delineated as: superior, above-average, average, and needs work. Students scoring superior in all three categories above will be given preference to return in the summer of 2012.
Student Qualifications
- Brevard County public high school students.
- Age 16 and older.
- The student should have a ride to and from the office to which they are assigned.
- Preference may be given to multi-lingual students.

Please write a short 3-4 paragraph essay on either subject:
"Universal Health Care is a right."

"Universal Health Care is a privilege."
Please also include a brief paragraph about yourself.
Students are encouraged to indicate a geographical and medical preference, i.e. “Cardiology in Titusville”, or “Dermatology anywhere,” etc.
